Science & Research Insight
Did you know? Melatonin is a hormone naturally produced by the pineal gland in response to darkness. It serves as one of the body’s primary biological signals that helps regulate the circadian rhythm, commonly known as the internal “body clock.”
Scientists have studied melatonin extensively for its role in supporting normal sleep timing and maintaining healthy sleep patterns. Rather than acting as a traditional sedative, melatonin functions as a signaling molecule that helps communicate when it is time for the body to prepare for sleep.
A fun fact about melatonin is that it is produced naturally in nearly all vertebrates and even many plants. Researchers continue to investigate how melatonin influences not only sleep regulation but also the body’s natural antioxidant systems, cellular signaling pathways, and circadian biology.
